Keurig is one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of coffee machines for both household and commercial use and there is no doubt that a Keurig coffee brewing machine should be one of your top choices.
But if Keurig been such as a big company that has existed since the year 1998 there are a lot of different products that are separated in different product lines. In this review, we will be comparing the Keurig 1.0 vs 2.0 and telling you what the differences are between these two product lines.
What’s the difference between these product lines?
After all, they are both developed by the Keurig company and are pretty similar in appearance but there are a few differences.
First of all, it is important to mention is that the Keurig 2.0 product line was released after the 1.0 line and it comes with a lot of extra features such as a larger choice of brews sizes on the majority of models, a larger water tank on average and introduces a new brewing setting that incorporates the new K-Carafe Cup size that will go into further detail below.
On the other hand, you have the Keurig 1.0 product line that does not come with as many features as its successor however it has stood the test of time and is one of the most widely used coffee appliance product lines in the world which can be very useful if you are ever looking for help with your Keurig coffee appliance that is from the 1.0 product line.
It is also important to note that the 1.0 product line is also known as the Keurig Classic while the 2.0 coffee appliance line is also known by

A Detailed Comparison
We are going to thoroughly compare these two product lines in each of the key areas of differences in the sections featured below.
Design and Appearance
The first major difference between these two models is their appearance which is mostly down to two factors, the first is that they have been released many years apart with the Keurig 1.0 line being released before the 2010s while the 2.0 line was released in the year 2015 which is why there are such being differences in appearance.
Coffee brewers from the 2.0 line compared to the 1.0 are much slimmer in appearance and incorporate much sharper features compared to the 1.0 which appears much more curved which was a trendy design at the time of its release.
Furthermore, another factor in why the appearance of these two product lines are different is that they have different features, all the Keurig 2.0 coffee machines come with a basic touch screen while not all of the 1.0 machines come with one and because of this, you will find that that the majority of the machines from the 1.0 product line have a lot more buttons placed on the right side of the machine compared to the Keurig 2.0 line that has fewer buttons altogether thanks to incorporating a touch in the center of their machine.
Water Tanks
With the 2.0 product line being released after the 1.0 it is probably not surprising that the second Keurig product line comes with a lot of improved features and one of those things is the water tanks also known as water reservoirs.
It is estimated that on average in coffee appliances under the 1.0 line the water tanks are able to hold 48 ounces or 1.3 liters of water which is only around 6 cups of coffee for every full water reservoir refill that you make.
While with the 2.0 models the Keurig company has taken the criticism from its customers on board and increase the size of the water storage facility in their contemporary machines where machines can hold anywhere from 70 ounces to 90 ounces of water at once depending on the model.
Pods
The Sizes of the Pods:
There are no actual issues or advantages with the sizes of the coffee pods with any of the two product lines however it is important to note that the products from the 1.0 and 2.0 line do not use the same shape or size of coffee pods. The 1.0 coffee pods are known for being much more smaller in size compared to those from the 2.0 line.
Therefore if you are looking to upgrade from a 1.0 product to a 2.0 coffee machine and vice versa you should make sure that you use up all your pods if possible or at least know that you will not be able to use them on machines from the another Keurig product line.
Using Non-Keurig Pods:
The Keurig coffee machines are all designed to be used with the ‘K-Pods’ which are the official pods manufactured by the Keurig company, This is a big moneymaker for the company with the machines constantly requiring refills. Some Keurig users may prefer coffee pods from other brands or just want to save some money.
In Keurig 1.0 models you are able to use any coffee pods that fit into the machine, on the other hand with the 2.0 line you are only able to use official Keurig coffee pods which is because the second-generation machines have an in-built sensor that looks for a special serial number that is found on the official pods.
K-Carafe Cup Compatibility:
The K-Carafe Cup is a new drink sized that was first introduced in the 2.0 Keurig line, it allows you to have much larger cups of coffee that are around 30 ounces in quantity. Furthermore, there are K-Carafe coffee pods that only fit into the 2.0 appliances and ensure that even when you serve larger quantities of coffee in a cup it will still remain concentrated and thus retain its strong flavor and scent.
Use of Refillable Pods:
As mentioned further above, in the Keurig 1.0 models, you are able to use all kinds of pods that fit into the machine including refillable pods that are beneficial both if you are trying to save money and also trying not to pollute the environment around you.
Originally with the Keurig 2.0 machines, you were not able to use refillable pods however the company saw that there was a lot of demand and decided to introduce their own refillable pods that only work with 2.0 coffee brewers. Overall these pods are higher quality but much more expensive.
Settings and Control Buttons
Physical Buttons and Touchscreen Interface
The Keurig 1,0 coffee brewers do not come with a touchscreen interface, instead, they rely on physical buttons for everything from turning the machine on and off and also selecting the brewing settings that best fit your specifications.
Having said that, the Keurig 2.0 models all come with a touch screen that is placed in the center of the top of the machine, while there are some buttons for the most used instructions placed on the right-hand side of the machine to save you time from having to traverse multiple menus every single time.
The 2.0 products offer more in terms of control options. For instance, all of them come with strength controls so that you can easily switch between drinking mild and strong coffee.
The only way to do this with the older line is to use different sizes of K cup pods. For instance, if you wanted to brew a really strong coffee, then you’d have to use the smallest size, which is the 6 ounce one.
Apart from the touchscreen allowing you extra settings and customization it also makes the machines a lot more user-friendly with the touchscreen interface having software that features guides and tutorials on how to use the appliance properly.
Brewing Settings
Both of the product lines come with various brewing settings, however, the coffee appliances from the 2.0 line by far have a larger amount of settings that allow you to customize your cup of coffee to your personal tastes.
Some of these customization settings allow you to control the temperature of the coffee, the brew settings as well as how concentrated you would want your coffee.
Furthermore, you can now have large cups of higher strength coffee compared to before with the 1.0 models when you had to settle with the smaller cup sizes in order to create a concentrated coffee mix.
Additionally, you can save the settings on the Keurig 2.0 allowing you to order your machine to make your favorite style of coffee without having to spend minutes selecting all the specifications every time that you want a coffee.
Programmability
Both the 1.0 and 2.0 coffee maker lines allow you to program your coffee machine to some extent, for example, both have an auto turn off feature after your machine has been inactive for between 9 and 30 mins with the user being able to change the default setting to fit his needs.
Additionally, you can program the machines of both product lines to turn on at a specified time for example in the morning which can save you a few minutes of waiting.
The Keurig 2.0 models do come with more programmable features that let you set pre-defined settings for different cups of coffee which is enhanced by the machine’s ability to scan the barcode of official Keurig pods to identify and automatically know what coffee settings to use without you having to press any additional buttons.
Indicators
An important part of coffee machines that ensures that the coffee brewers are all serviced properly is the indicators that notify you whenever the water reservoir needs to be refilled for example.
On the Keurig 1.0 machines, the indicators are LED lights placed either at the front of the appliance where the buttons are located or alternatively at the back on top of the water reservoir.
However, with the Keurig 2.0 models, a message will generally start to flash on the touchscreen itself. There is no real difference behind the execution of the indicators and they do not offer any advantages or disadvantages.
Advanced Settings
The Keurig 2.0 brewers come with many new advanced features one of them is the ability to select the language of the touchscreen menus between English, French, and Spanish. This provides extra usability if your English is not that good or it is not your preferred language.
Another advanced feature that is part of the 2.0 model line is the ‘high altitude setting’ which automatically detects if you live in a location with a high altitude and thus lowers average temperature when brewing the coffee to ensure that it comes out the way it should be.
Additionally, there is there are advanced programmability settings that allow you to make the machine work the way that you want it, for example, you can decide for how long certain types of coffee are brewed for as well as how much water should be added.
